Last week we picked up the newest member of our family, a 6 week old Yorkshire terrier. She’s the cutest little ball of fuzz I’ve ever seen! We named her Luna, in honor of the previous dog we had with the same name, who was hit by a car this past Valentine’s day. Suffice to say, Valentine’s day will never be the same…
Before I continue, let me preface this story by saying that my husband and I believe in the idea that the spirit lives on. We both had a strong bond with the Luna who had passed away and felt that her spirit still wanted to be part of our family. So with that in mind, the very next day (Feb 15th) we set out to find her again. My husband just had this sixth sense that she had decided to come back as a female Yorkie. No idea why, just something he felt.
On that hunch alone, we began looking for Yorkie breeders in the area who had a litter born that day. After quite a hunt, we found one who just had 3 babies, two males and one female. We told her our story about losing our dog the day before and asked if we could come see her new little girl. She immediately felt compassion for us and invited us over.
When we arrived, the breeder brought out the little female, who was whimpering uncontrollably. I asked if I could hold her and she reluctantly said okay. In my mind, I cautiously wondered if this newborn puppy possessed the same spirit of our dearly departed Luna and tried to not get my hopes up. The breeder gently placed her in my hand and, to my great surprise, she immediately stopped crying. I moved her closer to my chest and she laid her itty-bitty little head on me, looking up (with her eyes closed) toward my face, which was exactly how Luna use to lay on me when I held her. At that moment, I was about 75% convinced it was our little Luna.
On faith, we told the breeder we wanted to purchase her immediately and that we’d pick her up when she was ready to be weaned from her mom. She happily agreed and said we could come back to visit in a few weeks when her eyes opened. In two weeks time, we went back to see her and, again, she was crying and stopped when I held her. But this time, I lifted her up in front of my face and whispered “Hi Luna” and made eye contact with her. She stared intently back at me and then licked my nose a bunch, which is exactly what our other Luna use to do. When we left, I was now about 95% sure it was Luna.
Now, 6 weeks later, she’s home with us. When we arrived home, my husband put her down on our bed and she instantly curled up on his pillow, just like the Luna we know and love use to do all the time. The breeder said to expect her to cry a lot the first few nights because she’d be missing her mom. But you know what, she hasn’t cried even once. It’s amazing to me because she’s really does have all the same personality traits that we knew from Luna! Now I’m 100% convinced that it’s the same little Luna.
Now I know there are people who would believe this is all just in my head. Maybe so. But I can say is that our little family is complete once again now that she’s here with us…
